At Microcement South, we have spent years installing these floors across the UK and teaching people how to do it properly in our training centre. We know what works, we know how the materials behave in the real world, and we know exactly what it takes to achieve a top-tier finish.

Whether you are renovating a family kitchen or fitting out a high-traffic commercial space, this guide will tell you everything you need to know.

Why Choose Microcement Over Traditional Floors?

The material is often chosen as a more practical, versatile alternative to polished concrete. While poured concrete requires heavy machinery, structural considerations, and expansion joints to prevent cracking, our system offers the same industrial aesthetic without the headaches.

Here is why it has become the go-to choice for modern interiors:

  • Completely Seamless: There are no grout lines or expansion joints. You get a continuous, flowing surface from corner to corner.
  • Incredibly Thin: A full installation is typically applied at just 2mm to 3mm thick. This means you do not need to alter your doors or skirting boards, and it adds almost no structural weight.
  • Can Be Applied Over Existing Substrates: With the correct preparation, we can apply it directly over well-bonded tiles, concrete, or stable timber floors. This saves massive amounts of time and money on demolition.
  • Underfloor Heating Compatible: The material is a fantastic conductor of heat. It warms up quickly and evenly, making it the perfect partner for both wet and electric underfloor heating systems.
  • Fully Customisable: From the exact colour shade to the level of texture and the final sheen (matte, satin, or gloss), the finish is completely tailored to your project.

A Room-by-Room Guide (Residential)

This finish is not just for one specific area. Its inherent strength and water resistance make it suitable for almost any room in the house.

Kitchens & Open Plan Living

The kitchen is the heart of the home, which means it sees dropped pots, spills, and heavy foot traffic. The system is incredibly resilient. When properly sealed with our trade-grade polyurethanes, it becomes highly stain-resistant and easy to clean. Because it is seamless, you can run the exact same floor from your kitchen straight through into your living and dining areas to create a massive sense of space.

Bathrooms & Wet Rooms

This is where the material truly shines. Traditional bathroom tiles rely on grout, and grout is a magnet for mould and discolouration. Our finish gives you a completely waterproof, continuous surface where mould simply has nowhere to hide. We can even run it straight from the floor up the walls and into the shower enclosure for a bespoke, spa-like feel.

Hallways & High-Traffic Zones

Hallways take a battering from wet shoes, muddy paws, and dragged bags. A well-installed surface can handle the daily grind with ease, requiring only a simple sweep and mop to keep it looking sharp.

Commercial Installations

When specifying a floor for a commercial space, aesthetics have to be balanced with serious durability. We supply and install for retail stores, offices, restaurants, and showrooms.

  • Durability in Retail: The compressive strength of high-quality mixes can easily withstand the constant footfall of a busy shop floor.
  • Hygiene in Hospitality: For cafes and restaurants, the lack of joints makes the floor incredibly hygienic and fast to clean at the end of a busy shift.
  • Brand Identity: Because we can tint the plaster to almost any colour, we can match your flooring to your specific brand aesthetics, from raw industrial greys to warm, welcoming earth tones.

Installation: Preparation is Everything

We are always completely honest with our clients and trainees. This is not a quick, single-day job. It is a premium, multi-layered system that requires patience and extreme attention to detail.

A lasting floor is all about the foundation. We never cut corners on preparation. Before the plaster even touches the floor, the substrate must be absolutely solid. We use high-grade fibreglass mesh and specialised primers to ensure the surface is completely stabilised.

From the initial base coats that build the strength, through to the decorative top coats that provide the aesthetic, and finally the multiple layers of protective sealers, a typical installation will take several days. It is an art form, and the results are entirely dependent on the skill of the installer and the quality of the materials used.

Looking After Your Floor

One of the biggest selling points of this finish is how easy it is to maintain. Because there is no grout, day-to-day cleaning is a breeze.

  • Daily Cleaning: Simply vacuum or sweep away loose grit, and mop with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner.
  • What to Avoid: Keep away from harsh, acidic chemicals or abrasive scouring pads. Bleach and traditional supermarket floor cleaners can slowly strip the protective sealer over time.
  • Long-Term Care: Just like a premium wooden floor, the surface may eventually show signs of life after years of heavy use. The beauty of the system is that the floor can be lightly sanded and re-sealed to bring it right back to looking brand new.
